Mole and Skin Tag Removal: What Actually Happens

11 September 2026

Moles and skin tags are almost always harmless, but that doesn't mean you have to live with ones that bother you or catch on clothing and jewellery. Here's what removal actually involves.

Check Any Changing Mole With Your GP First

Most moles and skin tags are harmless, but if a mole is new, changing in size, shape or colour, itching, bleeding or just doesn't look right to you, please see your GP before booking any removal. They can check it properly and refer you to a specialist if needed. We only treat moles and skin tags that are suitable for cosmetic removal.

How They're Removed

The right method depends on what's being treated. Skin tags are typically removed using a fine laser or similar targeted technology, after the area has been numbed. Moles are usually treated with a comparable precise approach, chosen based on their size, depth and location, always after a proper visual assessment.

What the Appointment Involves

The area is numbed beforehand, so the treatment itself is generally quick and far more comfortable than people expect. Most appointments are in and out within a short visit, with no need to set aside a full day.

What Recovery Actually Looks Like

Afterwards, the treated area may look a little like a small graze — some redness or mild irritation for a few days is completely normal, and a small scab often forms as part of healing. It typically takes up to two weeks to heal fully, and resisting the urge to pick at any scab makes a genuine difference to how cleanly it heals.

Simple Aftercare

Keeping the area clean and dry for the first 24 hours, then gently cleaning it and applying any aftercare product provided, is usually all that's needed. Covering the area if it's prone to rubbing against clothing helps it heal without irritation.
